This course will offer inspiration and support to teachers who are looking for their pupils to gain deep conceptual understanding.
Teachers will be introduced to lesson sequences around high quality texts that they can take back to class for immediate implementation. This course offers a complementary introduction to some of the theory and practice of Mastery, including the concreate, pictorial and abstract approach as well as conceptual and procedural variation.
Using high quality picture books as a starting point, we will develop practical activities to bring maths learning alive in real life situations. Teachers will feel inspired and confident in their knowledge of high quality texts and will feel equipped to teach and plan in a new way. This way of planning and teaching compliments a mastery approach to maths learning. It will result in a mental shift to realise that Maths is everywhere in our world and therefore mathematical experience of the children will change as a result.
